Mysterious "Hamlet" from the Orient presented by Company EAST.

　Company East's first performance in New York was an interpretation of　the Greek tragedy "Medea", reviewed prominently in major newspapers such as the New York Times and the Financial Times.

　Company East will be returning to New York's La Mama Theater with Shakespeare's Hamlet.

　 A total of 8 performances are scheduled between 29th January and the 8th of February 2009.

　The choreography and artistic direction by Kenji Kawarasaki is unique.

　He combines traditional eastern techniques of Noh with modern western dance to produce a culturally rich, revolutionary dance-drama that's unlike any existing form of dance or musical theater production.

　This time a new dimension will be added to the drama by the introduction of moving graphical images generated by six projectors,brought over from Japan.

　The visual display will show words and images, making the experience truly multicultural and open to interpretation for Japanese and English speakers alike.

　Hiroshi Jin is an internationally acclaimed dancer and actor who has played female roles in his recent performances, showing off his sensitivity and dynamism simultaneously.

　Jin, who has proved himself even in provocative female roles will take on the male role of Hamlet this time, and there's much anticipation as to how he'll express himself this time through this famous character.

Ophelia:Yoko Tomabechi, Gertrude & Horatio: Yuji Koide, Barnardo & First Player as King- Mutsutaka Jin , Francisco & Second Player as Queen & Third Player as Lucianus - Daisuke Kaji .

Company East's "Hamlet" is based on the Buddhist ideas of love and death and the spirit of Zen.

It is a spiritual and fantastic experience.

Company East, who has only performed outside Japan, collaborates with theatre "Zamza Asagaya" "Hamlet" will be performed in Japan in April, "Medea" will be shown in Japan.

　Hamlet（Hiroshi Jin） is away at University when he hears that his father, the King of Denmark, has suddenly died, and his mother, Gertrude, has married his Uncle Claudius（Sho Tohno）. He is recalled to Denmark where he seethes, consumed with grief and anger. Haunted by the ghost of his father, Hamlet becomes obsessed with the idea that his uncle murdered his father and that his mother has been disloyal, and that he must avenge his fatherﾕs death. His strange behavior at court leads to his family believing that his love for Ophelia （Yoko Tomabechi） is driving him to distraction. When Hamlet has a traveling group of actors perform a scene that closely resembles the murder of his father, Claudius arranges to have him sent to England and killed.
The plan is thwarted and in the meantime Ophelia, confused, heartbroken and bereft of her father Polonius - who has been accidentally killed by Hamlet - drowns herself.Claudius convinces her brother Laertes to challenge Hamlet to a duel, and the play concludes with a frantic swordfight laced with poisoned wine and tragic death.
