Concept

Hiroshi Jin performs as Medea at New York's La Ma Ma etc in January 2007.

Medea is stunningly based on zen: the spirit between life and death, the erotic beauty of the bare body.

@In 1997 Japanese dancer-actor Hiroshi Jin gave an astonishing lead performance in the first production of Medea by an Asian troupe at the ancient amphitheater of Kourion, in one of Cyprus' world heritage sites.

@Hiroshi Jin and Company East will present the Greek tragedy Euripides' Medea at La Ma Ma etc The Annex from January 4 to 14, 2007.

@Company East's Medea was awarded the Scotsman 5 Stars at the 2001 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and described by The Guardian as bathed in the red glow of blood.

@This will be the first production of Medea by Company East in New York.

La Ma Ma Experimental Theater Club, founded by Ellen Steward, hosted performances by Shuji Terayama's Tenjo Sajiki and Yutaka Higashi's Tokyo Kid Brothers, and over the 40 years of its history over 80 Japanese productions have been staged at La Ma Ma, for a significant impact on the Japanese theater world as well.

Company East first performed Euripides' Medea in Greece in 1996, in the Takagi Noh style. The perfect linking of dance and drama, choreographed and directed by Kenji Kawarasaki, and the visualization of the three murder scenes in dance drew standing ovations from the Grecian audience.

The visualization in dance of Hiroshi Jin's Medea murder of her brother Apsyrtus in the opening scene, the murder by sorcery of her husband Jason's new love Glauce, daughter of King Creon, and the murder of her children, raised anew among the Grecians the question of whether Greek tragedy has depended too much on words alone.

Now, in New York, Company East's Medea is not only an introduction to traditional Japanese culture, but is also a Greek tragedy: a stunning presentation based in zen, the spirit between life and death and the erotic beauty of the human body. The performance is rich with spectacle, from Hiroshi Jin's transformation from male to female on the stage, to the scandalous scene where Medea's heroic husband Jason has sex with his new love Glauce.

Hiroshi Jin created the new dance technique, spiritual dance, as detailed in the book Hiroshi Jin's Spiritual Dance (Tama Publishing, 1998): a fusion of Japan's butoh with Western contemporary dance, incorporating movement of what is termed the chakras in yoga.

The spectacle, unfolded by Company East's cast of only 5 actors, marked by an East-West flavor and the motif of zen, and directed and choreographed by Kenji Kawarasaki, is a stunningly beautiful original Medea that will transfix the New York audience.

š‚QHiroshi Jin Profileš

šHiroshi Jin Profileš

@Charismatic Jin has been called the new wave of the musical world since his three-part spiritual musical Reincarnation in 1982 (Reincarnation,@ Prince of Egypt, and @Spring Snow).

In 1991 and 1992, Jin adapted the film version E. M. Forster's Maurice, which started Japan's obsession with the beautiful young man, for the world's first musical production of the story. In 1996, he also wrote and directed the musical adaptation of the Japanese comic Dororo written by manga artist Osamu Tezuka, best known as the creator of Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion. Jin also performed the leading role of Hyakumaru in this first live action version.

In 1997, Hiroshi Jin's Company East gave the first performance of Medea by an Asia troupe at the ancient amphitheater of Kourion, among the ancient ruins in Cyprus, and received the highest award for popularity at the Larnaca Festival. This was Company East's second production of Medea outside Japan.

In a completely different genre, Jin has formed the all-male, ultra-extreme show team, the J-Boys. The Scotsman newspaper gave it highest compliments as a show to follow Matthew Bourne's 'Swan Lake'. In June 2003, the Montreal Mirror featured the J-Boys at the Montreal Fringe Festival on its front page, and in August Company EAST performed Shakespeare's Macbeth in English at the Edinburgh Festival.

Now, Hiroshi Jin and Company East will be performing Medeai©photosj at New York's La Ma Ma E.T.C. The Annex theater.

Hiroshi Jin also lectures at corporate seminars and other venues, as a spiritual, pheremonal dancer wielding the power of appearance and adept in performance from Greek tragedy to male strip show. Jin's new book Twice as Attractive: The Spi-Fero Power of Appearance Secret of Success is currently in negotiation with publishers.
